An overwhelming majority of homebuyers and sellers in Massachusetts worked through a real estate professional in 2011.
According to the 2011 Massachusetts Profile of Home Buyers & Sellers, compiled by the NAR, 94% of buyers and sellers said they worked with a Realtor last year. This is an increase of 12 and 13% since this statistic was first tracked 2003.
The study also found that despite the high number of foreclosures and short sales, only 3% of sellers cited not being able to afford their home as a reason to sell.
"The market conditions of the past few years have made the process of buying and selling a home more complicated, therefore it makes sense that so many buyers and sellers would choose to work with a real estate professional to manage the transaction," said 2012 MAR President Trisha McCarthy.
Massachusetts residents used real estate brokers at a greater pace than the rest of the country. Nationally, the number of buyers who have worked with a real estate professional has grown from 69% in 2001 to 89% last year. The rate in Massachusetts is 94%. Of those national "For-Sale-By-Owner" (FSBO) sellers, half knew the buyer prior to the sale.
